Vincent Price

Vincent Leonard Price (Born in St. Louis, Missouri on May 27, 1911) was an American actor, well known for his distinctive voice and serio-comic performances in a series of classic horror films made in the latter part of his career.

Despite his lasting association with the world of horror, Price started out as a character actor. He made his film debut in 1938 with Service de Luxe and established himself in the film Laura (1944), opposite Gene Tierney, directed by Otto Preminger.

Price's first venture into the horror genre was as the title character in the film The Invisible Man Returns (a role he reprised in a vocal cameo at the end of the 1948 horror-comedy spoof Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein).

In 1953 Price starred as Henry Jarrod in House of Wax (1953), the first 3-D film to land in the year's top ten at the North American box office. His next roles were The Mad Magician (1954), the monster movie The Fly (1958) and its sequel Return of the Fly (1959). He also starred in the original House on Haunted Hill (1959) as the eccentric millionaire Fredrick Loren.

In the 1960s, Price had a number of low-budget successes with producer-director Roger Corman starting with House of Usher (1960), which earned over 2 million at the US box office and led to more Edgar Allan Poe adaptations including Pit and the Pendulum (1961), Tales of Terror (1962), The Raven (1963), The Masque of the Red Death (1964), and The Tomb of Ligeia (1965). He starred in The Last Man on Earth (1964), the first adaptation of the Richard Matheson novel I Am Legend. In 1968 he portrayed Matthew Hopkins in Witchfinder General (released in the US as The Conqueror Worm).

Vincent Price suffered from emphysema, a result of being a lifelong smoker, and Parkinson's disease; his symptoms were especially severe during the filming of Edward Scissorhands (1990), making it necessary to cut his filming schedule short. He died of lung cancer on October 25, 1993.

"I'll go on acting until I die. They will have to bury me before I retire, and even then, my tombstone will read: 'I'll be back.' "

  1. Not sure what happened to my comment....but I will try again...although this one will not be as good as the first one.

I have only seen 9 of the movies you listed....including 6 since knowing this guy from England who likes Price. I have seen a 10th Price movie...Song of Bernadette.

His career was long and impressive....I like the fact that he went out with a great movie like Edward Scissorhands. Another fine addition to your collection.

  2. Thanks for the comment Bruce, always appreciated amigo. I've seen nearly all the films on this page, I've been a Vincent Price fan for decades especially his horror output. Pit and the Pendulum is out on Blu-ray time to retire my DVD copy.
