Joan Crawford (1906–1977), born Lucille Fay LeSueur in San Antonio, Texas, was an American actress in film, television and theatre. Starting out as a dancer on Broadway, Crawford was signed to a motion picture contract by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1925. In the 1930s, Crawford's fame rivaled, and later outlasted, MGM colleagues Norma Shearer and Greta Garbo. Crawford often played hardworking young women who find romance and success. These "rags-to-riches" stories were well received by Depression-era audiences. Crawford became one of Hollywood's most prominent movie stars, she was Oscar nominated three times, winning for Mildred Pierce (1945).
Crawford married four times. Her first three marriages ended in divorce; the last ended with the death of husband Alfred Steele. She adopted five children, one of whom was reclaimed by his birth mother. Crawford's relationships with her two older children, Christina and Christopher, were acrimonious. Crawford disinherited the two and, after Crawford's death, Christina wrote a "tell-all" memoir, 'Mommie Dearest', in which she alleged a lifelong pattern of physical and emotional abuse perpetrated by Crawford.
The American Film Institute has ranked Joan Crawford 10th on their list of 50 Greatest Female Stars in Hollywood history. (Wikipedia)

Never been a huge fan of Crawford....but I liked many of the posters you have included in your collection. Like Bette Davis...Joan Crawford does not really have a great screen classic in career....which I think hurts her when young people think about her...or more likely when they do not think about her....Mommie Dearest is probably how they know her.....as good as Mildred Pierce was....I do not think many people are watching that movie every year like they do....It's A Wonderful Life or others. Kudos are how big your site has become...your hard work is impressive.
ReplyDeleteIt's a miracle they got Davis and Crawford to work together considering how much they hated each other. Straitjacket was good fun, I haven't seen Berserk in years. Trog was just awful. Thanks for the kind words Bruce, much appreciated amigo.
