James Coburn

James Harrison Coburn (1928 – 2002) was an American film and television actor. Coburn appeared in nearly 70 films and made more than 100 television appearances during his 45-year career, winning an Academy Award for his supporting role as Glen Whitehouse in Affliction.

A capable, rough-hewn leading man, his toothy grin, and lanky body made him a perfect tough-guy in numerous leading and supporting roles in westerns and action films such as The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Major Dundee, Our Man Flint, In Like Flint, Duck, You Sucker!, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Cross of Iron and Maverick.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s he would cultivate an image synonymous with "cool", and along with such contemporaries as Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen, and Charles Bronson, became one of the prominent "tough-guy" actors of his day. [Wikipedia]

  1. An excellent tribute to one of my favorite actors. It went from a unknown supporting player to a nice run as lead actor and then back to a solid supporting actor. The Firepower poster looks like a James Bond poster ripoff. His part in Payback is very small....but funny and memorable. My dad loved his part in The Great Escape with the French Cafe scene being his favorite part. I find it amazing that his voice role in Monsters Inc. is how he is still reaching young people today....but where is the poster? Speaking of movies not represented...where is The Last Sheila...that is one of my favorite Coburn movies

  2. Thanks for commenting Bruce, There must be a reason I didn't include The Last of Sheila, never saw the film, didn't like the poster. I didn't include 'every' Jim Coburn movie. I usually try to narrow it down to 30 or 40 posters. I included Payback because Coburn was memorable in the film, especially when he says "Man that's just MEAN!" :)

  3. I would highly recommend The Last of Sheila it is a great who done it mystery. Coburn's character is playing a game that turns deadly.

  4. The title was off-putting, probably why I've ignored it all these years. I'll keep it in mind next time it pops up on TV. Cheers.
